Everyone walks into a “worship service” expecting your music leaders to lead them in what we have dubbed “worship”.
What most of us do not realize is that we’re all worship leaders in our church, even the congregation. We are leading out in worship from the second we decide to wake up and go to church, until we leave the doors.
Attitudes, smiling faces, gruff ushers, unintelligible vocals, too tight pants, crying children, a spat in on the way to church.
All of these and more affect how people worship and lead in worship, not just the people on stage singing (yes, they’re the most visual of the bunch for sure).
What about the door greeter? (Been there, experienced that. Odd guy with the over powering hand shake? yeah everything came across as forced that day) They’re leading out in worship, they’re serving, setting up how you perceive the church, the body of Christ, the worship, how they’ll perceive the pastor coming across.
The tech guys? They’re leading out in worship, maybe more so than the worship team (I speak because I am one). If we’re not being transparent, doing our best, being invisible and making sure the worship team is at their best, then we can be incredibly distracting during worship. If we’re distracting during worship then we are not leading out, we’re not helping people engage.
People in the congregation are leading out by how engaged or disengaged they are.
Sure a lot of this is perception for a new person, but it is also affecting the regular attenders too.
We’re all worship leaders so how are you leading out? Are you engaged or disengaged?
